About our Program

The Akers Alternative Learning Program is located at the corner of 5th and Washington Streets.  Our site has the distinction of being the site of the first school in Roanoke Rapids, Central School.  The original building was built in 1908, and served as the districts only school until 1921.   Central School was renamed in 1956 to honor our district’s first Superintendent Alonzo E. Akers.  The original building was torn down in 1977; however a smaller building on the property continues to proudly carry the Akers name.  The building currently houses two separate programs; The Akers Alternative Learning Program and The Akers Accelerated Academy.

The Alternative Program moved to the Akers location in the fall of 1999.  Its central location allows the student easy access to community resources such as T.J. Davis Recreation Center and The Roanoke Rapids Public Library.  The program serves students who are long term suspended from the Roanoke Rapids School District, or have move into the District while attending an Alternative Program in another District.  The mission of the program is to provide each student with high quality academic experiences, a broad range of vocational activities while helping the student overcome the behavioral challenges that caused him or her to be placed in the program.
