Last week, the Career and Technical Education Department (CTE) at Roanoke Rapids High School organized a career fair to highlight the diverse options available to students after graduation. The fair featured a range of careers and opportunities, including businesses related to the career pathways taught at RRHS through the CTE Department. Students from both RRHS and Roanoke Rapids Early College High School were invited to explore the fair and engage with the different booths representing different career paths.
RRHS Career Development Coordinator Candy Moseley and Curriculum and Instructional Management Coordinator Christina Henderson worked to plan the event and successfully hosted over 20 businesses in the RRHS Gym. One local businessman, Phil Hux, who owns G.W. Hux & Company, stated, “This is such a good thing for all students. Some students have no idea what they want to do after high school, so this exposure to many career paths may spark something in one of them.”
Many of the businesses and agencies that came out to participate, such at the Roanoke Rapids Fire Department, brought hands-on equipment for the students to try on. Others gave presentations as groups of students came by their booth and surprised students by sharing just how many career opportunities were available to them in a particular field. Laura Ellis with the Halifax County Health Department was excited to share the many opportunities that the public health field has to offer. She stated, “There are so many paths that students can take and sometimes they don’t know that until there is an event like this that lets agencies talk directly with our future workforce. It is so nice to see so many different careers represented here today.”
