Emli Edwards Awarded Crawley Scholarship

Roanoke Rapids High School Senior Emli Edwards is the recipient of this year’s Ethel Crawley Scholarship giving her a free undergraduate education to the college of her choice.  

Assistant Superintendent Larry Catalano surprised Edwards with the scholarship letter today at Roanoke Rapids High School surrounded by her family.  

The Ethel W. Crawley Memorial Education Fund Scholarship directs a scholarship selection committee to award a full four-year scholarship that will cover tuition, room, board, school fees, and books.   In addition to the scholarship, the recipients will receive additional money to purchase a computer.

Edwards who volunteers with the district’s Exceptional Children’s Program plans to major in Special Education and Child Development at East Carolina University.  

“I’m grateful to the committee for choosing me.  This is quite an honor.  I have so enjoyed working with the exceptional children at Belmont.  They put a smile on my face.  I’m excited to see what the future holds for me,” Edwards said.  

Ethel Crawley died April 11, 1998 and was a lifelong resident of Littleton, teaching music for 28 years at Littleton High School.  Her scholarship has benefited dozens of Roanoke Valley students over the years.  

“Emli is a model student and student leader.  We had several students interview for this year’s scholarship.  All of them were deserving.,” said Jeff White, RRHS principal.  “We wish her all the best as she pursues her passion.”
