BECOMING A HEART SAFE SCHOOL DISTRICT
Project ADAM (Automated Defibrillators in Adam's Memory) is a national organization with one goal, to save lives. Founded in 1999, Adam Lemel's parents helped turn tragedy into hope when Adam, a 17 year old student athlete from Wisconsin died after suffering a sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) while playing basketball. This tragic event brought to light the importance of educating schools and communities with the knowledge to recognize and respond to SCA occurring on school campuses.
RRGSD started our partnership with Duke affiliated Project ADAM in March and with their guidance, we are making great strides to becoming a Heart Safe school district.
What does a Heart Safe School look like?
Goal:
To improve patient outcomes by ensuring trained staff are able to administer aid and get an AED to the victim in 3 minutes or less.
Action Steps:
RRGSD purchased 6 new AEDs in March 2022, making sure that Automatic External Defibrillators (AED) located on all campuses. This allows us to achieve our goal of reaching a victim in 3 minutes or less.
ALL RRGSD employees have been trained in CPR/First Aid to ensure that we have the knowledge and skill level to provide care to an individual suffering from a cardiac event.
Implementation of a district wide Cardiac Emergency Response Plan and formulating Cardiac Emergency Response Teams (CERT) at the school level.
Implement a yearly training drill at each of our school campuses.
