Roanoke Rapids Graded School District Board of Trustees recognized Roanoke Rapids Early College High School math teacher Ashley Lynch at Tuesday night’s meeting. Mrs. Lynch was recently selected as the North Carolina Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCCTM) Outstanding Secondary Mathematics Teacher for the 2022-2023 school year. Ms. Lynch received one-year’s membership in the North Carolina Council of Teachers of Mathematics and will receive recognition at the NCCTM State Conference in Winston-Salem this fall. In addition, her name will appear in the fall 2023 issue of the NCCTM journal and on the NCCTM and N.C. Department of Public Instruction's websites. Mrs. Lynch is a valued member of the RRECHS staff and we are so proud of her.

Belmont Elementary and Chaloner Middle School were also included in the special recognitions for their hard work and dedication in moving up a letter grade on the school performance grade scale for the 2022-2023 school year.  Leading a school is both an important and difficult job under the best of circumstances, but these two schools moved letter grades while also facing personal challenges. The entire administrative team who supported Belmont and Chaloner last year played an important role in the grades improving. Principal Lindsey Goble, Acting Principal and Assistant Principal Kirk Wynne, and Assistant Principal Terkessha Odom served Belmont Elementary last year; and Principal Angela Mallory, Acting Principal Larry Catalano, and Assistant Principal Heather Karns served Chaloner Middle School.

CPA Adam Scepurek of Anderson Smith & Wike PLLC reported the findings of the 2022-2023 financial audit. Although the district faced challenges such as inflation and rising costs, the Board's General Fund reported a $19,000 increase in fund balance for the year ending June 30, 2023. Through effective cost-containment and budget management practices, expenditures were below budget and the district did not use any of the $1.1 million of fund balance that had been appropriated. Mr. Scepurek commended the district’s staff for their diligence and responsible fiscal management during the year.

In other Board news, RRGSD trustees approved revisions to seven policies related to the new Parent’s Bill of Rights. Detailed information about the policies can be found on the district website at www.rrgsd.org/page/parent-rights
