GREENVILLE, NC – The East Carolina University College of Education proudly concluded its 2025 Pirate Institute for Regional Aspiring Teachers & Educators (PIRATE) program on June 20. This three-day, residential experience held June 18–20 on ECU’s campus, provided North Carolina high school students an immersive opportunity to explore careers in education—complete with campus living, dining, and all materials at no cost.
The program featured hands-on workshops, interactive sessions led by expert faculty, and chances to connect with local educators and peers from across the state. Participants explored key topics such as child development, pedagogy, and classroom leadership, strengthened communication skills, and received mentorship from ECU students and alumni. They also learned about ECU’s College of Education Community of Scholars and the Education Living and Learning Community, gaining valuable insight into campus life and academic support. Additional highlights included an Educator Preparation Program Fair showcasing teaching areas and pathways, and a panel of experienced educators who shared insights, answered questions, and discussed career advancement opportunities.
Guided by ECU College of Education faculty, alongside current students and alumni mentors, students engaged in high-impact learning through small group activities and large presentations, with a strong focus on teaching excellence and student engagement.
“The PIRATE program provides more than just exposure to teaching—it equips students with the tools, connections, and inspiration to envision themselves as future educators,” said Dr. Holly Fales, Assistant Dean for Undergraduate Affairs and Educator Preparation. “It’s a vital step toward building North Carolina’s next generation of passionate, qualified teachers.”
As the program grows, ECU remains committed to supporting aspiring educators, with many PIRATE alumni enrolling in ECU’s educator preparation programs and strengthening the state’s workforce.
Morgan Beam, student at Roanoke Rapids High School, was selected to participate in the 2025 PIRATE Program. This year’s PIRATE cohort included students from 35 North Carolina counties, underscoring ECU’s strong commitment to teacher preparation throughout the entire state. These outstanding students were selected through a rigorous process requiring recommendations and a strong passion for education, and they fully engaged in the residential experience.
